Profile and Description of Central America Cichlids

Thorichthys Meeki (Fire Mouth)

  

Profile:

Distribution : Mexico.

Size : Up to 6 inches, females slightly smaller.

Temperature : 220 to 29 0 C (higher temperature for breeding).

PH : 6.8 to 7.2.

Hardness : Slightly hard to slightly alkaline water. 

Diet : Flake, freeze fried & frozen and pellet food.

Breeding :  Bi-parentally Custodial Cave Spawner. 

Sexual Difference : Difficult to tell though males are generally bigger with longer extended fins.

Description:

 

One of the common fish from Central America, the fish is peaceful except during breeding. They get their common name of firemouth from their red color in their belly and under their mouth. They prefer rocky habitat with some sandy substrate and can vandalise plants within the aquarium.  The species is widely breed in the aquarium due to their popularity. 

These fish flex their gills in show of strength when encountering challenges to their territory or during courtship. 

Thorichthys Meeki (Fire Mouth).  Bright red underside of the fish is one of the attractions of these fishes. They frequently extend their gills during mock fight and it is a delight to watch.
