How to Select Cyphotilapia Frontosa (Cyphotilapia Gibberosa)

Introduction

This has been a common question for Frontosa lovers that I thought worthwhile to provide some tips in how to go about selecting this particular fish.

The guide would be most useful in selecting young fish as the characteristics (colour, strips etc) of the matured ones would have been easily established.

Besides observing that they are healthy (read the other article on how to select healthy fish), pay attention to the following to have the best chance of obtaining the best looking Frontosa.

Number of strips

Only the Kigoma Frontosa has 7 strips while the rest of the Frontosa (now named as Cyphotilapia Gibberosa) has 6. The Kigoma has a obvious black blotch under the eye. The Moba and Zaire often has a "zerro" mask across the eye.

Quality of Strips

Beside the numbers, observe the quality of strips in terms of whether they are well defined, straight or crooked or slanted. Observe whether there are obvious mooring at the end of the strip. Those with clean straight strips without mooring will grow up to be better looking.

Colour

Do note that nervous fish normally will be pale so practise some judgement on this area.  Best to let the fish settle down before selecting.  However, if there is no choice, then it would still be a good to select one with the best coloration.
