Introduction |
|
This
gallery contains photos of my cichlid tanks. In 2001 to 2002,
with the limited experience in keeping cichlids, my tanks were
really "community tanks" where the various types of
cichlids are housed in the same tank. After early 2003, I started
to have "species" tanks to group cichlid requiring the
same water parameters. Some of the CA/SA are so aggressive that
most of the times they are separated by dividers within the tank.
Since
2003, I avoid mixing different types of cichlids in community
tanks. My tanks are either single species or with cichlids from
same region/areas.
I now have 3 tanks,
2 x (4' by 18" by 18") and 1 x (2 ft by 18" by
18") tanks.
The
photos are mostly taken with a Fuji finepix 1.3 Mega pixel
and some with SONY Mavica. The later pictures were taken
with Canon S3 IS (up to 6 M) and this offer better quality for
re-sizing. I now use a Canon 40D.

Tips
for tank set up |
|
Rules
of thirds.
Divide the aquarium length into 3
parts and placed the rocks/decorations at the 1/3 and 2/3
area. This give a balanced feel.
Appropriate
type of decorations.
Avoid sharp objects or
decorations that can injured the fish when they take
shelter or when they are frightened. Do
not over decorate.
The more rocks and
substrate you put into the aquarium, the less the volume of
the water and the heavier the tank. 10 to 15% is a good
guide.
Avoid
dead spots.
Avoid creating dead spots or
caused obstruction to filter outlets/inlets. This would save
maintenance effort and every 5-10 mins saved during each
weekly maintenance cycle can add up and result in totally
neglecting maintaining the aquarium altogether.
